Panchakarma, as the name suggests Pancha = five & Karma = Procedures. Hence Panchakarma is a combination of five procedures of cleansing & detoxification, which aim at collecting the deep rooted toxins in the body & flushing them out of the body.

Ayurvedic treatment of the disease has two aspects Shaman Chikitsa & Shodhan Chikitsa. Shaman is pacifying the imbalanced doshas within the body by means of herbs, diet & lifestyle. While Shodhan chikitsa is removal of toxins out of the body, & Panchakarma is the shodhan Chikitsa.The Five procedures of Panchakarma are

Vamanam

Vaman means therapeutic vomiting or medicated emesis which is removal of toxins through oral route.This is the best treatment for the aggravated & vitiated kapha dosha, which dislodges the toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. This therapy is done for preventive & curative purposes.Vaman is beneficial for respiratory diseases like bronchial asthma, chronic cold & cough, chest congestion & for diabetes, obesity & psoriasis.

Virechanam

Virechan means therapeutic purgation or inducing loose motions wherein elimination of toxins happen through the anal route.Virechan is the best treatment for Pitta dosha & it improves digestion & metabolism.It is advised in various skin diseases, hyperacidity ,chronic constipation migraine etc.

Basti

Basti treatment comprises of administration of medicated liquid (oil & decoction) through anal route.It is the prime treatment in Panchakarma & is considered as one of the most important treatments for many diseases, primarily Vata disorders.Basti is not just a colon cleasing process, apart from cleansing deep rooted toxins,it also nourishes the colon & other body tissues. Basti treatment proves to be beneficial for bone, joint & muscle disorders, obesity, diabetes etc

Nasyam

The word Nasyam is derived from Sanskrit word Nasa which refers to the nose and consists of administering medicine (medicated oil, juice extract or powders) into the nasal cavity. It's a method for treating illnesses related to the head region for example, headaches, sinusitis, nose block, hair fall etc and & its impacts are wide-ranging.

Raktamokshnam

Raktamokshan (therapeutic bloodletting) is the prime treatment for blood detoxification, The texts of Ayurveda consider Rakta Dusti (vitiated blood) as one of the main causes of many skin diseases. This treatment specifically is used for eliminating the impure blood from the body thereby promoting formation of new pure blood. Raktamokshan is achieved by venesection (syringe) or application of leeches.It is commonly advised in skin conditions such as psoriasis, blood disorders and also in pitta diseases.
